So given the amount of snow still on the ground when I woke up this morning, I was expecting at least a delay. The roads weren’t even plowed yet. But the district decided to keep the schools running, “business as usual.”
I don’t know if they know that a majority of the urban city kids have to walk in that. Some of them don’t even have coats or proper shoes.
It’s frustrating that they stress knowing our kids, but they still treat our kids like a business, not kids.
Get it together.

So I’ve decided to take up blogging again. Why? Because I feel like writing down my thoughts. I tend to get nostalgic and reading previous blog posts helps me get there. I’ve recently joined a blogging 101 group to help get started. I already have a few posts under my belt but I think this helps me be a bit more accountable (see previous post on resolutions). So today’s assignment is to write “Who I am and why I’m here.”
So…
So who am I?
I’m Katrina Castro and I’m a lifelong learner. I’m naturally curious and love to learn about new things or learn new skills. I also love reading. I love all forms of media. There are a few things I take sides in because I tend to look at things from all different perspectives. I almost can never choose a side. I love dogs and I’m allergic to cats.
And why am I here?
Because this site is called “Musings of a Teapot.” I like to think and reflect on random stuff that comes to me. I have a voice. I’m here to use it.

I’m not ready for it. I’m pretty sure none of my other teacher friends are ready for it either. Even though I did get a nice break, still long enough. I really wish we had off that Monday and Tuesday before Christmas. Believe it or not, I think that would’ve made all the difference.
I’m actually glad to have made it this far actually. Teaching is something I’ve always wanted to do, but my idealistic thinking has to be put aside. I was a little spoiled with teaching college first. There, I ask the students to do something, and they’ll do it. With high school students (especially urban city students), asking them to do anything is like pulling teeth. I almost have to wave a piece of candy in front of their faces in order to get them to do anything. “Here’s your incentive, please do your work!”
I didn’t want to say it, but I’ll say it: “Back in my day.”
But yeah, back in my day I did my work without complaining. Why? Because I wanted to go to a good college. Because I wanted a good job. Because I didn’t want to get beat the living crap out of me by my parents. The kids that I teach don’t have the same ambitions as me. But I’ll do my damn best to help them understand that they can be successful.
With all that being said, I’m still not ready for tomorrow. I’m praying for many snow days.
OMG Please. Snow Days. Please. I miss you.

It’s basically the same every year:
• Lose weight
• Eat less
• Clean more
• Drink more water
But I’ll add a few more so that I can hold myself accountable.
• Blog AT LEAST 3 times a week (you’ll know if I’m not keeping up with this).
• Read more (joining a book club helps).
• Go to the movies more (2014 only saw me go to the movies 3 times…this is unacceptable).
• Be more organized (yeah I’ll let you know how this goes).
So that’s basically it. I’ve already signed up for and researched a bunch of blog post ideas just in case I can’t think of anything to write.
I’m happy to be updating this more 🙂

A few months ago I joined a book club called “The Prose Hoes Book Club”. I was added by a good friend and co-worker (hey Stacey!). For a time I didn’t have energy or will to read or finish a book, but I still had my love of reading. A few members of the book club attended YA’LL Fest along with me back in November. This basically rekindled my love of reading and so far I’ve finished 6 books since joining (2 of which were for the actual book club).
For Christmas, I got a copy of “These Broken Stars” by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner. This book was recommended to me by Stacey and I put it on my Amazon Wish List. I started reading it December 30th and finished it January 1st.
